Mayweather vs. McGregor: Dream Fight of 2017

Fight Night is coming soon on August 26, 2017, featuring the highly-anticipated and unprecedented fight between MMA star Connor McGregor and multiple-time boxing champion Floyd Mayweather. The fight is scheduled to be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. What better place to cast bets than in the biggest gambling capital of the country?

Tale of the Tape

Both fighters are matched in size and weight as Mayweather last fought in the boxing ring as a welterweight in 2015. As of 2016, McGregor moved to compete in MMA fights also as a welterweight. Both men are no strangers to knowing what it takes to win fights by knockout. In boxing, Mayweather retains an undefeated record, holding a total of 26 knockouts over the course of 49 fights in his career. Mayweather also successfully defended three different welterweight titles during his November 2015 title bout against challenger and interim champion Andre Berto. It was after that match, Mayweather announced his retirement. In mixed martial arts, Connor has amassed a total 21 victories, winning 18 by knockout. Leading to this fight, McGregor is the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion and was previously the UFC Featherweight Champion. Clearly both these fighters are no strangers to winning and holding championships.

While the credentials of both fighters are impressive there are small factors to consider that could play against both men. One factor is age. Mayweather will enter the ring against an opponent precisely eleven years his junior. Mayweather initially retired from boxing at the age of 38 in November 2015. McGregor turned 29, as of July 14, 2017 and has remained active on fight cards since 2016 when this dream match was first announced. As of February 24, 2017, Mayweather enters the ring at age 40. The prudent and obvious question some may ask is will Mayweather fight at the same level that he previously fought leading to his retirement? Watch the story unfold on August 26, 2017 as the young lion battles the veteran lion for the first time.

Another factor to consider is McGregor's ability to adapt to a strict boxing match as opposed to his career heavily spent fighting in the style of martial arts where in, fighters are allowed to fight with using their hands and their feet. Although it is a valid question fans may harbor in the backs of their minds, it may also not be significant factor in McGregor's offense as almost all of his victories have been by knockout, thus proving his title-winning ability to win matches by knockout. McGregor is also a Southpaw, which may or may not factor into Mayweather's ability to defend against a left-handed striker.

Match Parameters

The fight will be contested as a boxing match. This prohibits McGregor's use of fighting with his legs or applying any submission holds, thus making this match purely a striking-based match. As both men have competed as welterweights, this match will be fought fight to 12-round limit. The fighters will use 10 oz. gloves. Prior to the event, both men will undergo standardized USADA testing.

Match Tactics

Some authorities suggest McGregor may look for the knockout early, indicating his biggest challenge is overcoming Mayweather's defenses. If successful, it is predicted McGregor could well end the match in 9 rounds, possibly lasting into the opening minutes of the 10th round if necessary to finish off Mayweather. Other predictions suggest Mayweather will ride out the match with control of the pace so as to wear down McGregor with his strong defensive style, so as to land an eventual knockout. Most experts agree this match will conclude in no less than 9 rounds.

Money Talks

UFC President Dana White who is firmly behind McGregor, expects his UFC Lightweight Champion to make an estimated $100 million from this match.

Odds of Victory

For those who wish to place their money on Mayweather, experts suggest it is likely that Mayweather will win by knockout, technical knockout or disqualification--almost alluding to possibly McGregor breaking the rules. Any bets placed in the $100 range for a McGregor victory can be expected to yield $555. More daring gamblers betting on McGregor that are raised to $1,000 can expect a $5,550 winning from his victory. Betting on Mayweather may seem to be safe and sure wager to make, ranging between $750 with a winning of $100, but be warned: should McGregor win the match or fight to a draw-finish, than you have suffered a heavy loss.

Wagers placed early, are always encouraged, as the earlier wagers are often the most certain wagers and less of a hit to the spender's pocket than later wagers placed closer to a fight date.

And for those who are just into the sport of fighting, seeing two different fighters from two different sports is truly a dream come true and a match that may only happen once.
